Scottie Scheffler tied Tiger Woods in becoming only the second man to win the PGA Tour Player of the Year award in three consecutive seasons.

The American world number one won his third Jack Nicklaus Award after winning 91% of the votes from his fellow players.

Scheffler won seven titles during the season, including a second Masters title at Augusta National in April.

While Rory McIlroy has won the award three times, Scheffler and Woods are the only two players to have won it three times in a row.

“I think we’re always looking to compare someone to Tiger Woods,” Scheffler, 28, said after receiving the award.

“I saw it a lot growing up, but there’s really only one Tiger, it’s just kind of that.”

Scheffler became the first player to win seven titles in a single season since Woods in 2007.

Woods, 48, won the award 11 times during his career and he received it five times in a row between 1999 and 2003, then won three consecutive awards again from 2005 to 2007.

Although winning the Masters was the highlight, Scheffler says he saved his best golf for his gold medal at the Paris Olympics.

“I would say the nine holes that come to mind the most would maybe be the back nine at the Olympics,” the Texan said.

“The way Teddy (caddy Teddy Scott) and I finished that tournament was pretty cool.”
